We spent our rest day exploring the TREES OF MYSTERY, eating, and generally hanging out.
At breakfast we learned that our motorist friend finally made contact with the tow truck, but they won’t be able to get him home until Monday. He didn’t seem too bothered, and is enjoying his forced vacation.
We walked down 101 to the Trees of Mystery, a roadside attraction featuring giant (or maybe life sized) Paul Bunyan and Babe statues out front, a trail through the redwoods, and a gondola ride up to the top of the hill. There was a dude somewhere as the voice of Paul, making comments on the people coming and going. Ruth was highly amused, and told Paul about our lunch plans. While kind of silly, it was a nice activity.
We hopped across the street for lunch, then returned for the Native American museum attached to the Trees. It was actually quite nice, although keeping the kids out of trouble was a challenge.
In the afternoon, we chilled in the cabin and introduced the kids to Star Trek: The Next Generation (Time Squared, which is actually kind of scary). Then the usual housekeeping, dinner, and bedtime. Without the naps in the trailer, we can get the kids to bed a lot earlier.
Tomorrow we start a five day stretch until the next rest day. The first four are relatively short, but the final day will probably be the longest day of the trip. It certainly has the most climbing.
